About This Item

New York: Harcourt, Brace & World, 1966. First Printing, First U.S. Edition. . Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Sims' second novel and, like most of his fiction, a bibliomystery, though it lacks the bookseller, Sims himself was after tours as a journalist and in British Intelligence during WWII. This time the focus is on William Beaumont, an American actor living in London after the death of his wife in a fiery auto accident. Beaumont is from nightmares and sudden inexplicable blackouts as well as anonymous notes and news clippings about fire victims and the unexplainable appearance of a meat hook on his bedroom pillow. There is a pattern to these cruelties but it goes unnoticed until an American professor, researching a book on Beaumont's films, visits the gravesite of the actor's wife. By then, Beaumont has disappeared. Text is very slightly cocked, o/w boards and text are clean, tight and unmarked. The dustjacket shows only a quarter-inch tear on the lower edge of the front panel and a touch of edgewear; no creasing or significant tearing or chipping, not price-clipped. A collectable copy of a scarce bibliomystery.
