"Before this work appeared in 1859, the standards for carpentry and building construction were largely set by foreign publications, most notably those of Peter Nicholson and Thomas Tredgold. Sloan filled a great need by documenting current American developments, many of which have made contemporary European practices obsolete. He covers domes, roofs, spheres, carpentry, joinery, and the five orders. HITCHCOCK 1198. Wear to backstrip extremities with slight loss, lower corners rubbed.
