About This Item

[Miami, Florida], (1992). 38 jumbo drugstore print color snapshots, each approximately 6" x 4" on semi-gloss "KODAK" branded photo paper. Images with digital date stamp at lower right. All unmarked, about fine.

More than three dozen original vernacular views of the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew in or near Miami and shot on August 28, 1992, just four days on from its historic landfall in South Florida as a Category 5 Tropical Hurricane. At the time, it was the costliest and most destructive hurricane ever to hit Florida.

The views here focus on a branch location of the department store Service Merchandise, likely the S. Dixie Highway location, according to our source for the photographs, the additional environs likely along the coastal highway which extends from Miami, south into the Florida Keys as State Highway 1.

A searing primary glimpse into the aftermath of an historic Atlantic hurricane through the eyes of a retail worker attempting return to the job.
