London: Michael Joseph, 1941. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. About Very Good in a Good jacket, unclipped (5/- NET) but with the remnants of a sticker covering the price, generally toned, bumped and with a few closed tears, loss at the top edge. Cream buckram, some rubbing and soiling, with blue ink lettering and designs on the spine and front board. Square, bound with some reading wear, bookplate on the front endpaper, title page left uncut. Gallico's classic story of friendship set amidst the horrors of World War II. Winner of the 1941 O. Henry Prize and adapted multiple times to film, television, and the stage. A scarce first U.K. edition.

Synopsis

Paul Gallico was born in New York in 1892. He became a minor celebrity as a sports writer and then began writing short stories for magazines. Gallico went on to write many more short stories and novels, including The Poseidon Adventure in 1969. He died in 1976.
