About This Item

Portland, OR: Timber Times, [2014]. 4to. vii, 320 pp. With 100s photo illustrations, text illustrations, maps, maps on endpapers. Green cloth, gilt lettering front cover & spine, w/ d.j. cover art painting of Spruce Production Division loggers and Shay Locomotive, F/F copy. First edition. An invaluable and detailed history of the Spruce Production Division -- a unit of the Army Signal Corps’ Aviation Section -- which was established to guarantee Sitka Spruce supplies for aviation during World War I. Although the headquarters was in Portland, OR, the main operations center was at the Vancouver Barracks in Vancouver, WA, establishing the largest spruce sawmill in the world. The Division established over 60 military logging camps throughout the Pacific Northwest, mostly near existing privately owned sawmills operated under the direction of the Army. The Division was able to produce nearly 150,000,000 board feet in 18 months. The photo illustrations show the building of logging railroad trestle bridges, road building, ferry boats to transfer, cut-up mills, many of the sawmills set up in Coos Bay, Clatsop, Yaquina Bay, Grays Harbor, Willapa Bay, and more.
