London; Constable & Co. Ltd. [1919], 1919. Hard Cover. Signed Limited Edition. Number 459 of 575 copies only signed by the artist to the limitation sheet. Quarto, pp. 170. With colour frontispiece and 15 additional colour plates mounted on handmade paper, tissue guards captioned in red, and further 24 black and white illustrations by Rackham throughout. In the original quarter "vellum" cream paper composite publishers' binding; gilt titles and Rackham vignettes to boards, gilt spine title and ornaments; top-edge gilt with other edges uncut. Binding lightly soiled, and slightly bumped to corners and spine tips, mild offsetting to endpapers. Overall, a Very Good firm, tight, square, and clean copy free of annotations of inscriptions with bright vibrant plates. Collection of tragic Scottish, English, and border ballads including The Twa Corbies, The Lament of the Border Widow, and Lass of Lochroyan illustrated in Rackham's characteristic style. A leading figure of the Golden Age of British book illustration, Rackham's dark and ethereal approach to his subjects continues to influence artists, illustrators and film directors to this day.
