About This Item

[Florence], privately published [Orioli], 1928. . First edition, first impression; one of 110 numbered copies signed by the author. Additionally inscribed by Douglas. 4to. Publisher's yellow cloth, title to upper board in red. Some minor toning but a lovely copy.
Douglas collects a number of particularly impressive limericks to which he adds pseudo-scholarly notes of such tongue-in-cheek genius one is tempted to quote them all. Best not! The first edition was published in just 110 copies, printed on fine paper and each signed by Douglas. Various piracies appeared over the years but Douglas did not reprint the selection himself. One of the great literary gems of the 20th century. The present copy with the signed presentation inscription to the half title page, 'To his friend Prof. G. Giglioli from Norman Douglas 13th March 1934'. The recipient was a doctor in Florence and friend of the book's publisher, Pino Orioli.
