About This Item

1854 1ed Song of Roland Franks Charlemagne Chanson de Geste Medieval Chivalry

'The Song of Roland' is the oldest surviving major work of French literature. This famous chanson de geste was originally written in the 11th-century and is based on the Frankish military leader Roland and the Battle of Roncevaux Pass in 778 during the reign of Charlemagne. This particular work is the 1854 first English edition which was beautifully translated by Anne Marsh-Caldwell from the French translation of Vitet. Masterfully written, this work is a magnificent example of the medieval narrative and literary form of its era.
