About This Item

Songbirds of the Torrid Zone, Kent, Ohio: Volair, 1979.Folio, deluxe English edition of a French series begun in 1805, limited to 1,500 copies, pp. (xxix), 291, full calf with elaborate gilt decoration, raised bands on spine, all edges gilt, 70 color plates. An official publication of the Audubon Society. James Clements tells us in his preface that before this edition, Vieillot's great work had been out of print for 170 years. This is a handsome tribute to the great French ornithologist, who ranks with Audubon and Wilson, although he is lesser known and was always poorly supported.
