About This Item
London: F.S. Ellis, 1871. First Edition. Octavo. First issue without printer's imprint on page [288]. 287pp., 8 pp. first state publisher's ads. His poem "Walt Whitman in America" shows how deeply the American's poetry had affected him though he saw a savage and sensualism there those triumphs over a moribund religion. His appreciation of Whitman's poetry both for its ambivalent sexuality and its celebration of a democratic flow in his world is a fascinating part of Swinburne's thought. "Bound by Burn and Company" in the original green decorative cloth from designs by Dante Gabriel Rossetti stamped in gilt, spine gilt, binder's ticket on rear pastedown (Burn Co.), some spots of bubbling to cloth, one corner lightly bumped, hinges just starting. A very good copy.
