About This Item

Boston: Copeland and Day, 1898. First. Cloth. Very Good. First edition. A scarce collection of verse originally writen in Judeo-German (Yiddish) and here translated into short prose pieces by Leo Weiner, who was instructor in Slavic languages at Harvard. The author, Morris Rosenfeld, was born into a family of fishermen in Poland in 1862. He was given only a basic education as a young boy, then moved to England to learn tailoring, and finally emigrated to America in the late-1880s. Quoting Prof. Weiner, "It is (in the sweat-shops of New York) he has learned to sing of misery and oppression. His health gave out and he had to abandon the shop for the precarious occupation of a Yiddish penny-a-liner. In the meantime he has developed Judeo-German versification to unknown proportions.". A slim octavo volume of 116 pages with glossary, bound in patterned gren ribbed cloth, lettered in gilt. Very good with a touch of wear at the rear top gutter tip.
