Boston: Roberts Bros., 1871. First US edition. Hardcover. Light wear to spine ends and corners, front innner hinge starting, previous owner bookplate to front fixed endpaper, newsclipping pasted to rear endpaper, else very good. Original green pictorial cloth with gilt spine lettering and golden bear illustration on front board; octavo (5.25 x 7 inches); [8], 29 pp. 4 pages of ads at front and 24 pages of press notices for "Songs of the Sierra" at rear. Early work by the colorful and prolific poet of the West Coast. BAL issue A sheets (ads at front begin with "Thoughts About Art", binding B wth publisher's imprint at spine foot "Roberts Bros." This copy with 24 pages at rear described by BAL in postscript note as a "terminal catalog," though it consists entirely of reviews from the English press, concluding with a biography of the poet from the New York Evening Post. The newsclipping pasted in is the complete text of "A Letter to the Public from the Poet's Wife - Checkmating the Mrs. Stowes of the Futures" to the Portland Daily Oregonian. Dated Salem, Oregon, by M. M. Miller. November 5, 1871. BAL 13751
