About This Item

Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1896. First American Printing. Hardcover. Very good. Publisher's dark red cloth decorated in silver, very good, light general wear, old inscriptions on endpapers from 1897. Appeared in the UK published by Methuen in 1895. An influential Faustian novel with occult themes. The novel is notable for its attempts to mix Christian thought with popular heterodox themes of the day, such as reincarnation and Theosophy or Blavatskyism. It is also a damning critique of the time's social structure - claiming both that Britain's elite are morally bankrupt and hinting an allegiance to ideals that soon gained in prominence after its publication (such as women's suffrage and the universal welfare state). A bestseller in its day, with some early admirers, including Oscar Wilde, it is also considered by many to be one of the worst supernatural novels ever written.
