It opens when he joined the Royal Artillery during wartime Britain, his service in North Africa and Italy and, at war's end, editing an arts magazine in Naples. He returned to England and commenced his teaching and his influencial work in adult education. He achieved overnight celebrity with the publication of "The Uses of Literacy" in 1957.
