About This Item
N.p.: Louisiana State University Press, 1947. Hardcover. Small 4to. Maroon cloth with gilt spine lettering. xii, 426p. Illustrations. Very good. Spine faintly sunned, else tight and internally fine. Attractive first edition of Volume VIII (only) in the noted 10-volume "A History of the South" series -- from the library of Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), U.S. Senator from Illinois (1969-81), and before him of his father, Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), Illinois governor and twice Democratic presidential candidate. Front flyleaf bears the senator's large, bold signature and sprinkled throughout the text are the governor's miniscule pencilled (occasionally inked) margin checkmarks and squiggles and occasionally a few words of pencilled commentary; rear flyleaf bears a half dozen pencilled lines of notes as well. Intriguing copy from celebrated father and son politicos who were both noted Civil War buffs, the son signing the book in which his father had made marks and notes.
