About This Item

UK,slim, small Qrto HB+dw/dj,Limited 1st edn. FINE-/GOOD+.No owner inscrptn and no price-clip to dw/dj.White pictorial illustrated dw/dj is grubby and edge worn, several small chips to its top+lower edges, along with some minor loss at head of spine,a degree more loss at foot of same, all corner tips rubbed and chipped with reciprocal loss and a portion of text missing to publisher's advert of rear panel - due loss of the glossy printed finish, leaving blank, bare paper beneath.Top edges gilt (teg),fore-edges trimmed and slightly aged/toned - as usual/normal; contents generally bright, tight and clean with occasional light, sporadic foxing/spotting to some text pages but the colour plates unaffected.Fairly bright and clean, sharp -cornered,publisher's original grey cloth boards,a black ink blocked vignette of a magpie-type bird perched on a leafy and flower bearing shrub, bright, crisp, blocked silver gilt title+author's name to front board, bright, crisp, silver gilt letters to spine/backstrip and a plain grey cloth rear board, without any decoration.Unusually, the plain white endpapers are much brighter and cleaner than usually encountered and without any offseting from pastedowns to opposite front+reverse of either the front+rear free endpapers, nor from the inner flaps of the dw/dj.Unillustrated pages, other than the card mounts are printed on chain-laid antique de luxe paper with its watermark. No dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners would appear unread, apart from my own collation.UK,slim, small Qrto HB+ dw/dj,Limited 1st edn (of 2,750),1-23pp [paginated] includes the narrative verse poem; plus [unpaginated] Jacynth Parson's 6 colour illustrations after her paintings, mounted plates each set onto grey card and each with descriptive letterpress in verse,full-page paper guards; plus lightly and sporadically foxed/spotted following blank, half-title,title page with red+black letters and a b/w ink vignette of a seaweed(?)-bordered spiny fish and to the rear a limitation page and 2pp blank - all with foxing/spotting both sides.Laid in loose,a beige Medici Society advertising card bookmark ephemera.
Described hard but fairly and honestly, reflected in price.
Story in verse,a narrative poem with Arthurian overtones.
Masefield would soon replace Robert Bridges as the Poet Laureate in 1930,having been chosen in preference to Rudyard Kipling,A. E Housman,Yeats,John Drinkwater, Walter de la Mare, and Henry Newbolt, six of his eminent contemporaries.John Masefield served as Britain's Poet Laureate from 1930-1967.
Jacynth Parsons (b. 1911 - d. 1992.) child artist and daughter of stained-glass designer and maker,Karl Parsons, whose close friend Harry Clarke helped to organise an exhibition of her work at the Medici Galleries in 1927,entitled 'Pictures From the Age of 3 to 16'. She had previously illustrated Wiliam Blake's 'Songs of Innocence' (1927) Clarke also introduced her to W.B. Yeats, who in an enthusiastic introduction to Blake's title, wrote, 'Jacynth Parsons is a genius of an amazing precocity,an accomplished artist and dreaming child'. She lived with her family in Middlesex (UK) and was a friend of the poet W. H. Davies from the age of two and she also illustrated his 'Forty-nine Poems'.(1928).Her father,Karl, published a children's poetry book: 'Ann's Book' (1929) a charming collaboration of his poems and her pencil drawings. She does not appear to have published anything in adult life.
