This book is an exact reproduction of Part III, Chapter VII, from Volume I of the author's 'Asia in the Making of Europe' (1965). It is published separately in the hope that students will find it a useful supplement to the materials on Southeast Asia's history derived from other sources. It includes eight chapters among which include 'Malaya, the Crossroads of Asia', 'Siam', 'Burma', 'Indochina', 'Sumatra, Borneo, and Java', 'The Spiceries', and 'The Philippine Islands'. .

Glossary
Some terminology that may be used in this description includes:
