Octavo, [6], 72pp. Burnt orange cloth, title in gilt on spine. No additional printings listed on copyright page. Solid text block, dust remnants to top edge, a near fine example. In publisher's dust jacket, price-clipped, archival tape to verso, a few small chips at corners, soiling to cover, a very good example. Signed by the author on title page, "This copy for / Mr. and Mrs. Percy H. Johnston / with admiration and warm regard / Francis Pendleton Gaines." Dr. Francis Pendleton Gaines (1892-1963) was a historian, president of Wake Forest University, and later the president of Washington and Lee University (1930 to 1959).
The recipient of this book, Percy Hampton Johnston (1881-1957), was president of Chemical Bank from 1920-1946. Johnston's portrait hangs in the National Portrait Gallery.
