A very nice copy in a crisp, bright binding; contents clean but for some scattered light to moderate foxing, largely clean. A typed review slip has been pasted to the front free endpaper causing some light rippling to that leaf. Remarkably uncommon for being issued from a major scholarly press. Gaines served as president of both Wake Forest College and Washington and Lee University. This present book was his first published work and served as his dissertation at Columbia. Howes G-8.
