A wonderful collection of essays by well known Southern authors and visitors to the South, ranging chronologically from the Revolutionary period into the first decades of the 20th century. Organized by topics, including land, rivers, home work, education etc., each selection is very well documented as to the date and author. One section is devoted to "The Negro" as African-Americans before the modern Civil Rights era. An excellent source to begin understanding the Southern literary tradition, or as a research source. B&W Photographs following pp. 230, adn 614. Previous owner's signature penciled inside front cover,along with a small, faint Yale Co-op stamp, and another faint stamp and erased price in upper right corner. No dust jacket.
