About This Item

[Rochester?]: (S.n.), 1899. Single sheet. 4" x 9 1/4. Fine condition. Faint browning toward edges but otherwise clean.. Black and white illustrations. This small broadside is a rare piece of ephemera from the unveiling of this monument to Frederick Douglass in 1899. The Rochester monument to Douglass was the first in the nation to honor a particular African American.

On one side of this souvenir is an image of the monument with a quote from Douglass's 1857 "West India Emancipation" speech at Canandaigua, New York. On the other side is a small photograph of Douglass, the dates of his birth, death, and burial, and particulars about the monument in Rochester and its committee.

Then New York Governor Theodore Roosevelt delivered the principal speech at the unveiling ceremony, and there were remarks by several other dignitaries as well.

OCLC locates one holding.
