About This Item

An illustrated catalog for an exhibition of 37 artists commissioned to travel across the USSR to depict the development of Soviet rail transport. The catalog includes travel routes for the first and second journeys, the list of commissioned themes, such as "electrification" and "modernization", as well as the list of participating artists including major names in Soviet caricature and poster art such as Kukryniksy (Krylov, Kupriianov, Sokolov), with Dmitry Moor, and Oleksandr Deyneka added to the second route. The introductory essay by the artist and theorist of Socialist Realism, Viktor Perel'man (1892-1967), calls for inclusion of themes of rail transport into Soviet painting tradition.

The traveling residencies were organized by Vsekokhudozhnik, of which Perel'man was a co-founder. A powerful and prestigious organization, Vsekokhudozhnik operated 1928-1953, commissioning art for exhibitions at factories, museums and worker's clubs. "Its membership expanded from 87 in January 1930 to 1500 by mid-1931, reflecting its importance in ensuring some means of livelihood to its members" (See J. Delvin, Media and Communication in the Soviet Union, pp. 31-32). The purchasing commission of the organization was composed of artists and critics who vetted the works of art, encouraging the artists to "police themselves", with the works in this exhibition reflecting the most up to date themes and styles. This copy from the library of the organization.
