Canaan NH.: Phoenix Publishing., 1973. Hard cover. Fine. No dust jacket.. 1 Tan cloth over boards. Brown titles, small cover graphics. 196 p. 24 cm. Simplicity, nature, integrity, gardening, farming, sharing, and understanding has marked the Farm and Wilderness Camps summer education and activity programs for three decades prior to this history by educator Kenneth Webb, who with Susan Howard Webb have grown this opportunity for families. Quaker-based, campers arrive in Plymouth and Mount Holly, Vermont, each summer for 4 to 8 weeks. In 1973, there were six camps, sprouted from an original camp for young boys, joined by another camp for young girls, then by a teen-age work projects camp. A small Native American lifestyle camp followed, located remotely, joined by a small wilderness hiking and canoeing experience for middle-schoolers. The need for activities for the youngest children began with a program for staff families, and evolved into a regional day camp. Standards have been guided by the original Webb principles, and the Camps continue today as a non-profit organization, instilling in young people self-confidence, practical and social skills, and a sense of community that stays with them.
