Original illustrated red cloth. 5 1/4" x 7 3/4". POS in pencil, dated 1902. Illustrator/Cartoonist Rose O'Neill was married to Wilson (1902-1907) and illustrated four of his books, including this one. O'Neill went on to create the"Kewpie" for the Ladies Home Journal in 1909. "Kewpie Dolls" were very popular bisque dolls modeled after O'Neill's creation. Wilson was the father of Charis Wilson, who was married to Carmel photographer Edward Weston and was his model in countless photographs. The Spenders was made into a silent film in 1921.
