About This Item

New York: Viking, 1983. First edition / First printing. Brown cloth spine, ochre paper-covered boards. Fine in very close to fine dust jacket with crease to the rear flap and one tiny edge tear. This original edition of In the Spirit of Crazy Horse was withdrawn by the publisher when Matthiessen and Viking were sued for libel by David Price, an FBI agent, and the former South Dakota Governor, William J. Janklow. After 4 years of litigation, the suit was dismissed, after 3 additional years of appeals, the book was finally reissued by Viking in an updated edition. This is the original suppressed edition.

Synopsis

"A giant of a book. Indescribably touching, extraordinarily intelligent."— The Los Angeles Times Book Review . Matthiessen's chronicle of a fatal gun-battle between FBI agents and American Indian Movement activists in 1975.
