Infime restauration en marge du premier plat. Préface de Baudelaire sous forme de lettre à Arsène Houssaye dans laquelle le poète expose cet ambitieux projet littéraire. Les poèmes sont suivis dans ce volume des Paradis Artificiels, en seconde édition. La page de faux-titre porte l'intitulé : ""Oeuvres complètes"". L'ouvrage, constituant le quatrième volume des œuvres complètes de Charles Baudelaire, se vendait séparément, l'édition de ces œuvres complètes s'échelonnera sur trois ans. Rarissime exemplaire imprimé sur hollande, seuls grands papiers : il en aurait été tiré moins de dix. Le seul exemplaire broché, tel que paru, que nous avons pu recenser. *** Ouvrage canonique du mouvement littéraire moderniste, les Petits poëmes en prose se présentent comme l'un des exemples les plus anciens et les plus réussis d'une écriture spécifiquement urbaine, l'équivalent textuel des scènes de ville des impressionnistes. Leur influence sur la poésie moderne sera immense et ouvrira la voie aux Illuminations rimbaldiennes, aux Chants de Maldoror de Lautréamont, au Drageoir aux épices de Huysmans - comme le remarque Cheryl Krueger « Le Spleen de Paris a également changé le cours de la poésie au-delà de la France, influençant les futurs poètes en prose : Jorge Luis Borges, T.S. Eliot, Franz Kafka, Rainer Maria Rilke, Walt Whitman et Gertrude Stein, pour n'en citer que quelques-uns ». Parmi les cinquante poèmes originaux assemblés dans ce recueil, cinq n'avaient même pas fait l'objet de parution en revue. Aussi chaotique en apparence que Les Fleurs du Mal étaient architecturalement organisées, cette édition originale reprend le « désordre choisi » par Baudelaire. Il a lui-même considéré ses poèmes en prose comme le pendant contradictoire de ses Fleurs, « mais avec beaucoup plus de liberté, et de détails, et de raillerie » (lettre à Jules Troubat, 16 février 1866). Cette correspondance est établie par la présence de poèmes-miroirs entre les deux recueils, comme « La Chevelure » et « Un hémisphère dans une chevelure ». Le poète opère ainsi un tournant définitif vers la modernité en créant une poésie se délectant de ses propres contradictions, « contenant des multitudes » selon le célèbre vers de Walt Whitman, autre grand peintre de la vie moderne. Baudelaire sera le premier à ouvertement revendiquer le poème en prose, deux termes qui se définissaient en creux - faisant donc s'effondrer une des barrières sémantiques les plus importantes entourant le genre poétique. Il n'est connu que quatre autres exemplaires sur hollande, tous reliés : - L'exemplaire de Charles Asselineau (relié par Capé, Masson-Debonnelle) à la bibliothèque Jacques Doucet, Paris - L'exemplaire des bibliothèques Noilly, Hayoit et Pierre Leroy (relié par Chambolle-Duru) - Un exemplaire en demi-maroquin vert (vente Porquet, 1888) - Un exemplaire en demi-maroquin rouge (vente Teschener, 1891) Une véritable rareté bibliophilique, renfermant les radicales productions d'un poète maudit, qui invita la prose dans sa poésie après en avoir maîtrisé la rime. With a preface to the collection by the author, derived from a letter to Arsène Houssaye, in which he articulates his ambitions for the prose poems. The poems are followed in this volume by the second edition of Paradis Artificiels. This edition was used as the fourth volume of Baudelaire's complete works, as stated ""œuvres complètes"" on the cover. It was also sold separately, given the several years it took to publish all seven volumes of the complete works. Extremely rare copy printed on hollande, the only deluxe issue: less than ten copies are said to have been printed. The only copy still in wrappers, as issued, we have been able to trace. This edition was used as the fourth volume of Baudelaire's complete works, as stated ""œuvres complètes"" on the cover. It was also sold separately, given the several years it took to publish all seven volumes of the complete works. A keystone to the canon of the modernist literary movement, Baudelaire's prose poems are considered one of the earliest and most successful examples of a specifically urban writing, a close equivalent of the city scenes of the Impressionists. They had a far-reaching effect on subsequent poetry, leading to Rimbaud's Illuminations, Lautréamont's Songs of Maldoror, Huysmans' Dish of Spices - as Cheryl Krueger notes ""Le Spleen de Paris changed the course of poetry beyond France as well, paving the way for future writers of the prose poem genre: Jorge Luis Borges, T. S. Eliot, Franz Kafka, Rainer Maria Rilke, Walt Whitman, and Gertrude Stein, to name only a few"". The fifty poems were posthumously collected in this 1869 first edition, in print. As chaotic in appearance as The Flowers of Evil were architecturally organized, this first edition takes up Baudelaire's original assemblage. He himself saw his prose poems as a counterpart to his Flowers, ""although with much more freedom, detail and mockery"" (letter to Jules Troubat, February 16, 1866). This connection is further established by the presence of key verse-prose doublets within the two collections, such as ""La Chevelure"" and ""Un hémisphère dans une chevelure."" The poet thus makes a definitive turn towards a modern poetry that revels in its own contradictions, ""containing multitudes"" in the words of Walt Whitman, another great painter of modern life. Baudelaire was the first to openly define his writings as ""prose poems"", uniting two terms so starkly opposed that each qualifies as itself by not being the other - thus collapsing one of the most important semantic barriers shrouding the genre of poetry. We are able to trace just four copies on hollande, all bound: - The Charles Asselineau copy (bound by Capé, Masson-Debonnelle) in the Jacques Doucet library, Paris - A copy from the Noilly, Hayoit and Pierre Leroy libraries (bound by Chambolle-Duru) - A green half-morocco (Porquet sale, 1888) - A red half-morocco (Teschener sale, 1891) A true bibliophilic rarity, containing the radical productions of a cursed poet, who invited prose into his poetry after mastering verse.
