New York: C. S. Hammond & Co., 1917-18. Five section map, each section 82 x 57 cm, each section divided into four folding parts mounted on linen backing. The five sections fit together to create a grand cartographic image 168 x 130 cm (51 x 66 inches). Scale 1:316,800 (five miles per inch). Stock toned along folds and edges, yet state of preservation is remarkably good. Sheets published weekly over a five-week period between December 1917 and January 1918, the map shows the state of the battle lines at the end of 1917, including railroads, boundaries, roads, principal wireless stations, waterways, canals, various fortifications, aircraft depots, and cities. Since the sections are mounted on linen, the news coverage on verso of the sheets is not visible.

London: Printed for Thomas Wilcox, 1757. First Edition. Boards. Good. 4to. Nineteenth-century half-calf over marbled boards. xii, 255pp. Front board detached along with first two endpapers. Endpapers not original, added later. Some unobtrusive foxing throughout. Lacks the folding frontispiece. Interior is excellent and otherwise complete. This is a rare first edition of the "first and classic history of New York" (Streeter). A foundational text for any collection of books about New York or American colonial history, based on the official records of the administration of New York and on the earlier works of Colden and Charlevoix. The first edition covers history to the year 1732, though later reprints extended this coverage further. Smith was a British loyalist during the Revolutionary War who fled New York for Quebec City, where he became chief justice for all of Lower Canada throughout the late 18th century. Says Larned: "Within the period subsequent to the English Revolution, Smith is still…

New York: Horace Liveright. Good with no dust jacket. 1930. First Edition. Hardcover. "A very personalized retrospective examination of World War I propaganda in the United States by one who was deeply involved in creating it - from the pro-German side. Viereck (1884-1962) describes propaganda as the primary weapon of the world's invisible government, saying the microbes it scatters infect humanity like a plague. His purpose in writing this book was to administer an antidote against this plague. Includes examples of cartoon and other propaganda." - Robert Cole on page 110 of "Propaganda in Twentieth Century War & Politics". xiv, [2]-327 pp. Index. Black and white plates. "Now that the world has become calm and reason once more rules, we can read with pleasure and interest such a book as this, and wonder how and why we so nearly lost our balance during the trying days of the Great War." - Colonel Edward M. This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art

This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned. There are also markings throughout the book. "The roots of this book reach back to the early 1950s in Paris, where I began my professional career as a journalist. France, supported by the United States, was then fighting to retain its hold in Indochina against the Vietminh, the Communist-led nationalist movement there. As I reported on the French end of the war, I soon became acquainted with the names and places in Vietnam from a distance, But I scarcely imagined that they were to be part of my own experience. Then, in 1959, I was assigned to cover eastern Asia; the region that included Vietnam became my beat for more than two decades. I visited Vietnam most recently in 1981 for seven weeks, the longest permitted an American correspondent since the Communists gained control of the entire…
