New York: Scribner & Co., 1879 Hardcover, 4to, in three-quarter black leather over black pebbled cloth, titles in gilt to spine, 848pp. E.W. Smiley to foot of spine, which was a news publisher in Franklin, Pennsylvania in 1874. Printed by Press of Francis Hart and Co., then located at 63 AND 65 Murray Street, New York. Included are writings by Louisa M. Alcott, N. Danvers, Frank R. Stockton, Lucy Larcom, and Celia Thaxter, among others. Also, Harriet Prescott Spofford (of Newburyport, Mass.), and John Greenleaf Whittier's poem, " The Voyage of the Jetty," Packed with plentiful illustrations by notable artists such as Kate Greenaway, Howard Pyle and W. L. Sheppard. Includes fascinating articles for children of all ages: "Adventure on an Iceberg," "Besieged by a Rhinoceros," or "How a Comet Struck the Earth," and so much more, as seen from the index. **Editor Mary Mapes Dodge (1831-1905) is perhaps better known as the author of The Story of Hans Brinker." The Saint Nicholas compilations from Scribner's were begun in 1873. CONDITION: Very Good Minus. Exterior shows moderate edge wear. Top inch of front hinge cracked, but holding. Rear hinge is fine. The interior is lightly age-toned but generally clean and a delight to children to read, with short stories, non-fiction articles, games, crafts and biographies to improve young minds. . Hard Cover.
