About This Item

St. Vladimirs Seminary Press, March 1997. Paper Back. New. St. Seraphim (1759-1833) was perhaps the most beautiful flowering of the resurrection of monastic spirituality in nineteenth-century Russia, which affected the piety of both peasantry and intelligentsia. His spirituality, formed by his reading of John Climacus, the Philokalia, and the New Testament, was a marvelous combination of peasant simplicity with an aura of holiness that could be sensed even by those not particularly pious. He greeted everyone with the Easter greeting 'Christ is risen,' and addressed those around him as 'my joy.' His 'Conversation with Motovilov,' which is included in this book, describes an encounter of a close disciple with the saint, transfigured by the uncreated Light, an encounter in which the 'familiarity of the real blends with the extraordinary in a way that eludes detailed analysis, and yet we feel we touch the essence of the Saint's message' (Louis Bouyer). 150 pp.
