Biddle, Jr., introduction by author, credits, index of artists. Ochre coloured endpapers. Black-and-white photographic frontispiece. The text is profusely illustrated with coloured and black-and-white photographs and reproductions of portraits, drawings and sculptures. 1/4 black cloth spine with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. 3/4 brown coloured boards. Rubbing to the head and to the heel of the spine and scuffing to the book corners. Shelfwear to the lower edges and some fading to the top edges. Some marks to the book panels and browning to the paper edges. Illustrated dust wrapper, showing a reproduction of " Isadora Duncan " by John Sloan, with white coloured titles to the front panel and white and red coloured titles to the back strip. On the back panel are 4 reproductions of portraits within the text. The dust wrapper is rubbed and faded. Rubbing to the dust wrapper corners and to the head and to the heel of the spine, browning to the fold over panels and some staining has also occurred. Foxing and staining to the vreso side of the dust wrapper has also occurred. In this book "The cast of performers in 'On Stage' represents the great names in the history of the performing arts in America, 77 in all, including such early legends in their own time as Nancy Hallam, Charlotte Cushman, Fanny Elssler, Jenny Lind, Loie Fuller, Edwin and Junius Booth, and Joseph Jefferson. The majority of the figures, however, have gain ed star billing in recent memory - Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, John Barrymore, Geraldine Farrar, Jeanne Eagels, Mae West, Paul Robeson, Martha Graham, Helen Hayes, Tallulah Bankhead, Ethel Merman, Benny Goodman, Zero Mostel, Elvis Presley, and Jimi Hendrix, among others.
