Chicago: A. C. McClurg & Co., 1915. Octavo, green cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, upper edge gilt, xiv, 502 pp. Good, with light soiling to upper cover. From Preface: It is not the purpose of the author of “The Standard Concert Guide” to substitute it for the “Standard Oratorios,” “Standard Symphones,” and “Standard Cantats” which have been so long at the service of musical students and music lovers, but rather to combine these works in a single volume for more convenient use and thus make it of value both for concert and library purposes. To this end the analytical text of the older works has been condensed sufficiently to admit of its presentation in one convenient volume, and some new matter has been added to bring it down to date, including notices of works by Bruckner, Cowen, Dvorak, Elgar, Franck, Mackenzie, Parker, Parry, Sinding, Richard Strauss, and Tchailkovsky. The new volume is also enriched with portraits of the composers whose works are described in it. In brief, the author has sought to present a compact and handy concert guide to the public through the realm of the symphony, symphonic poem, oratorio, and cantata. The text has been made as untechnical as possible, so as to be intelligible to those unaquainted with the science of music, and the work is offered to the public with the hope that it may prove useful for general reference and satisfactory as a “Standard Concert Guide.” Contents include: Bach: Christmas Oratorio, Saint Matthew Passion, Magnificat in D, Ich Hatte Virl Bekummerniss, Gottes Zeit, Festa Ascensionis Christi, Ein’ Feste Burg; Betthoven: The Mount of Olives, The Ruins of Athens, The Glorious Moment, Symphony, No. 1, C Major, Symphony, No. 2., D, Symphony, No. 3 (Eroica), E Flat, Symphony, No. 4, B Flat, Symphony, No. 5, C Minor, Symphony, No. 6 (Pastoral), F, Symphony, No. 7, A Major, Symphony, No. 8, F, Symphony, No. 9 (Choral), D Minor, Choral Fantasie, C Minor; Benedict: Saint Cecilia; Bennett: The Woman of Samaria, The May Queen; Berlioz: The Requiem, Romeo and Juliet, The Damnation of Faust, Symphonie Fantastique, Harold in Italy; Brahms: The German Requiem, Triumphlied, Symphony, No. 1, C Minor, Symphony, No. 2, D Major, Symphony, No. 3, F Major, Symphony, No. 4 E Minor; Bruch: Frithjop, Fair Ellen, Odysseus; Bruckner: Symphony, No. 2 C Minor, Symphony, No. 4 (Romantic), E Flat, Symphony, No. 7, E Major, Symphony, No. 9 (Unfinished), D Minor; Buck: Don Munio, The Golden Legend, The Voyage of Columbus, The Light of Asia; Corder: The Bridal of Trirmain; Costa: Eli; Cowen: The Sleeping Beauty, Ruth, Symphony, No 3 (Scandinavian), C Minor; Dvorak: The Spectre’s Bride, Stabat Mater, Saint Ludmila, Symphony, No. 2, D Minor, Symphony, No. 3, D Major, Symphony No. 5 (From the New World), E Minor; Elgar: The Light of Life, The Dream of Gerontius, The Apostles, The Kingdom; Foote: Hiawatha; Franck: The Beatitudes, Symphony in D Minor, Les Eolides; Gade: Comala, Spring Fantasie, The Erl King’s Daughter, The Crusaders, Symphony, No. 1, C Minor, Symphony, No. 4, B Flat; Goetz: Symphony, No. 1, F Minor; Goldmark: Laendliche Hochzeit (Country Wedding) Symphony; Gounod: The Redemption, Mors Et Vita; Handel: Acis and Galatea, Alexander’s Feast, L’Allegro, Israel in Egypt, Saul, Samson, The Messiah, Judas Maccabaeus, Dettingen te Deum; Hatton: Robin Hood; Haydn: Ariadne, The Seven Words, The Creation, The Seasons, Symphony, No. 1, E Flat, Symphony, No. 2, D Major, Symphony, No. 6 (Surprise), G Major, Symphony, No. 9, C Minor, Symphony, No. 11 (Military), G Major, Symphony, No 12, B Flat; Hofmann: Melusina, Frithjof Symphony; Leslie: Holyrood; Liszt: The Bells of Strasburg, The Legend of the Holy Elizabeth, Les Preludes, Prometheus, Tasso, Festklange, Mazeppa, Hunnenschlacht, The Faust Symphony, A Symphony to Dante’s Divina Commedia; Macfarren: Saint John the Baptist, Christmas; Mackenzie: The Story of Savid, The Rose of Sharon, Bethlehem; Massenet: Mary Magdalen; Mendelssohn: The Walpurgis Night, Antigone, Edipus at Colonos, As the Hart Pants, Lauda Ston, Music to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Symphony, No. 3 (Scotch), A Minor, Symphony, No. 4 (Italian), A, Reformation Symphony, No. 5, Saint Paul, Hymn of Praise, Elijah; Mozart: REquiem, Symphony, No. 543 (Kochel), E Flat, Symphony, No. 550 (Kochel), G Minor, Jupiter Symphony, No. 551 (Kochel), C; Paine: Edipus Tyrannus, The Nativity, The Realm of Fancy, Phoebus, Arise, Saint Peter, The Temptest, Symphony, No. 2 (Spring), A; Parker: King Trojan, Hora Novissima; Parker, J.
