About This Item

Isla Vista, California: The Turkey Press, 1997. First Edition. Printed in a limited edition of 26 copies, this is number 13. Signed on the colophon by Harry Reese. A poem with paintings that imagines the gold standard as replaced by dead rats.

Designed, printed and bound by Harry and Sandra Reese of Turkey Press and Edition Reese. Issued in a red leather clamshell case with another box inside that is bound and lined in gold and wrapped in a piece of gray felt. Text printed in a separate book on one side of an accordion folded manilla colored sheet (24 x 175 cm.), folded to [7] p. ; 24 cm., and attached to back board. Front board covered in brown colored paper; back board and spine covered with burgundy colored cloth. Title blind stamped on cover. The text rests on a specially cut support imprinted with the No. 13 limitation. The weight is bound in the step, making the book heavy like a bar of gold. A rat trap (21 x 8 cm.) manufactured by the Woodstream Corp. of Lititz Pa. and titled "Victor V", is mounted on another support. Lettering of trap in red and black.

Harry and Sandra Reese received the 2015 Oscar Lewis Award from the Book Club of California. Harry Reese is a longtime faculty member in the Department of Art at UC Santa Barbara, and he founded the book arts program within the College of Creative Studies. His wife, Sandra Liddell Reese, has frequently taught book arts courses on campus. Together the Reeses are Turkey Press, a limited-edition, fine press printer and publisher in Isla Vista. The Turkey Press archives were purchased by the Getty Research Institute in 1992. According to OCLC, this book is held by one institution, Brown University. No copies in commerce, exceedingly scarce.
