About This Item
New York: Ballantine Books,, 1980. Released before the film First edition, first printing, signed by the author Donald F. Glut, who was Lucas's classmate at film school, on the title page. This official novelization was published a week before the theatrical premiere in May 1980. The cover art reproduces the original film poster by Roger Kastel. The work "may be regarded as a double adaptation - with the story and dialogue novelized from the script and most of the visual imagery adapted from the previous film and McQuarrie's concept art. [Such] examples reinforce the evolution of Star Wars from an individual story to a serialized story universe" (Van Parys, pp. 77-8). Small octavo. Original blue wrappers lettered in red and white, pictorial illustration on front cover by Roger Kastel. Wrappers bright, a little rubbed, expected toning of contents. A near-fine copy. Thomas Van Parys, "Another Canon, Another Time: The Novelizations of the Star Wars Films", Star Wars and the History of Transmedia Storytelling, 2018.
