Macmillan & Co., London, 1898. Hardcover, 8vo., 201 pages. Gilt lettering on the spine of an olive green hardcover. Top and bottom of spine, as well as the four corners, are very good to fine. Gilt "The English Citizen" at bottom of spine. A few light stamps, but none on the title page. A careful search reveals no other original (1898) hardcover copies for sale in any venue. Important, compassionate early work about society caring for the poor.

London, England: Macmillan, 1898. First edition. Hardcover. Good. Scarce. First edition, 1898. Ex library with "Withdrawn" stamp on title page. Call numbers removed from spine. Else good+. No dj. Thomas Mackay (1849 â€“ 1912), the son of a colonel, was a British wine merchant and classical liberal. He was born in Edinburgh and educated at Glenalmond and New College, Oxford. He retired from the bar in order to campaign for liberalism. He criticised old age pensions because he believed they would harm character and advocated reducing "the encouragement to pauperism held out by our present system of out-door relief" by restoring independence. Also, Mackay did not favour a compromise between individualism and socialism: "Those who talk of compromise seem not to realize that the knell of the period of compromise has sounded...We are falling under a tyranny more absolute and unrelenting than anything the world has ever seen".[wiki]

Pages remain clear with minimal tanning and foxing. Heavy crack at title page. Some occasional mild cracking to gutters throughout, binding remains reasonably firm. Boards have mild edge-wear with slight rubbing to surfaces. Mild crushing to spine ends. Book has a slight forward lean. Gilt lettering is darkened.
