About This Item

Taipei: Joint Commission on Rural Reconstruction, 1953. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good. Compiled by the Land Bureau, Department of Civil Affairs, Taiwan Provincial Government. In Chinese and English. Oblong 4to. Pp. xvii, 184. Laden with tables, some folding. With explanatory notes. Bound in blue cloth, with printed paper title label mounted on front cover, string-bound. Some light spotting to cloth, perhaps where binder's adhesive bled through, and some offsetting to pastedowns.

An assessment of the state of Taiwan's basic economy three years after Chiang Kai-shek established a provisional Republic of China capital in Taipei, his government forced to relocate there from Nanjing by the victorious CCP. Under US guidance and funding, Taiwan instituted land reform that abolished usurious practices in Mainland China, age-old and still in place under Chiang's KMT government, thus providing tenant farmers with some equity. The facts presented here establish the foundation for the Taiwan success story, which, from 1952-on, would experience rapid growth and, eventually, staggering distribution of exports. Uncommon.
