Brown cloth with titles stamped in gilt on front boards and spine. 73 plates (6 in color) and 18 additional illustrations. Catalog of plates, selected bibliography, index to plates. Published on the occasion of an exhibition of the surviving photographs of Edward Steichen from early in his career, when he was experimenting with the relatively new medium of photography and with his personal methods of printing and reworking platinum and gum-bichromate prints. Steichen was friendly with Alfred Stieglitz during this Symbolist period and the latter devoted an entire issue of Camera Work to Steichen and featured his work in many others. Later in life, Steichen was renowned for his fashion photography and later still, for his work as a curator at the Museum of Modern Art, for which he organized the noteworthy Family of Man exhibition in 1955.; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 180 pages .
