About This Item
American Book Company, New York, 1890. 8.25" X 5.75" in black pebble grained, embossed cloth. Starting to fray at spine ends and corner tips, Pencil scribbling inside front cover, owner's name on flyleaf and inside back cover. Some pencil underlining on 2 pages: about GOOD or a bit better condition. This is a 117 year old textbook - one hopes for use by teachers only - in spite of the title. Essentially, it is a 38pp list of words, followed by an alphabetical "Stem List". The author seeks to give the student clues to the meanings of words thru an understanding of their "stems" - the older words from which they were derived. This is interesting stuff, but way too advanced for most elementary school students, whose knowledge of Latin, Greek, Persian, and Icelandic is frequently found to be limited. The final 54pp is made up of examples in the form of quotations as illustrations. 282pp.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket.
