First edition, thus of these installments in Kelly’s monumental work, The Stereo-Clinic, which offered an invaluable step-by-step overview of the vital, and often life-saving surgical procedure to restore the vagina and birth canal following childbirth. He details how the vaginal opening becomes so completely broken down, little or no support remain for the bladder, rectum, and cervix, often from the perineum ruptured by the OB/GYN or midwife’s arm attempting to grasp the child during birth; tears from forceps, and these ruptures can even result in tears to the intestines leading to infection and sepsis. Kelly (1858-1943), was a pioneering obstetrician, developed a number of new gynecological surgical procedures, and was determined that his Stereo-Clinic series “provided high-quality educational resources to students and practicing physicians who did not have access to world-class clinical suites and teaching institutions.” The installments published from 1908-1915 used the stereoscope, a popular photographic viewer which pioneered present-day 3D technologies. All volumes of Kelly’s groundbreaking stereo-photographic work have become quite scarce. See: Sebastian Galbo & Keith Mages, Dr. Howard A. Kelly’s The Stereo Clinic: Health Science Pedagogy and the Egalitarian Future of 3D Clinical visualization, Journal of the Medical Library Association, Vol. 110, No. 2 (April 1, 2022), pp. 258-263.
