About This Item

New York: Charles H. Clayton & Co, 1873. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good. First Edition. [3], [141]-232, [6] pages. Small 4to. Brown cloth with plain spine panel. "Compliments of Brown Brothers & Co, Bankers 50 State Street, Boston" and "STERLING CONVERSION TABLES" in gilt on front cover. Front pastedown is advertisement for Brown Brothers, rear pastedown is advertisement for Clayton (the printer). Bright and clean internally, noting some offsetting of advertisements to blank endpapers. Covers are sound with minor soiling and some minor surface abrasions. Cloth. The majority of the book is given over to printed tables of conversion tables. A useful productivity tool before computers, used by those in the financial industry to do ready calculations as the values of the Pound and Dollar moved relative to each other. Old table listings such as this are interesting, as they often contained errors (being compiled by human beings) which made their way into various transactions - important to understanding how numbers "that don't add up" added up at the time. Even as late as the 1940s, journals such as MTAC published known errors in printed tables so that those who relied on them could correct errors.

Scarce, with only 6 copies listed in OCLC/Worldcat as of this listing.
