About This Item
London: Egypt Exploration Fund, 1885. First edition. Good. 33 cm; viii, 32 pages, 2 maps and 13 engraved plates, most of them by Marguerite Naville. Bound in original printed boards with blue cloth back strip. Corners and edges somewhat darkened and worn, but condition is very good. Library borrowing slip pasted to front blank (the book was never borrowed); no other library marks.
The first report for the Egypt Exploration Fund, and the one that established the format for all subsequent EEF publications into the mid 20th century. Called by KMT (the journal of Egyptology) "one of the brainiest and certainly the best educated of the early Egyptologists," Henri Edouard Naville (1844-1926) was already a Romantic figure in Europe when he undertook excavations at Tell el Maskhuta for the newly formed Egypt Exploration Fund. The volume offered here is the official report of that excavation. It is illustrated with very perceptive engravings by Marguerite de Pourtales, who married Naville in 1883.

About Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio
Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio owes its name and its inspiration to the traditional Italian studio bibliografico. These small antiquarian bookshops, typically run by individuals who combine deep scholarship with a love of the printed object, remind us that underlying the words "study" and "studio" is the Latin term for zeal and devotion, studium. Since 1993, my goal has been to match discerning collectors with extraordinary books and manuscripts.
