One of the most popular writers of the 19th century, Celia Thaxter lived most of her life on the Isles of Shoals, between Maine and New Hampshire, eventually running her father's hotel on Appledore Island and hosting a constellation of the most prominent figures of literary New England; she and her famous gardens were painted by Childe Hassam, and became known far and wide; her gardens can still be visited on Appledore.
