About This Item
Princeton, NJ: James E. Goodman, 1990. Ph.D Thesis, Princeton University. Hardcover. Fine. xx, 523 leaves ; 29 cm. 4to. Thesis (Ph.D.)--Princeton University, 1990. Includes bibliography (leaves 509-523). Hardcover. Generic pebbled brown cloth over boards. Typewritten on rectos only, on Baton's Opaque Diamond White Bond (with watermark). Most likely not the original typescript, i.e. xeroxed copy of original typescript. Book Condition: fine; the faintest signs of wear to very small areas of edges, interior text block unmarked and unmarred. A sharp copy of a scarce title. Worldcat shows only three institutional holdings: Princeton, Auburn, and Birmingham Public Library. This Phd thesis is, of course, the basis for the book of the same title, published by Pantheon in 1994 and honored as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. A telling quote from the acknowledgements..."Nonetheless, if this dissertation becomes a book, my mother will buy a dozen copies, from Bloomingdales." If this dissertation becomes a book. Well, it not only became a book, it became a Pulitzer Prize Finalist book! James Goodman is the author of essays, short stories, book reviews, letters, and three books: Stories of Scottsboro, Blackout, and But Where Is the Lamb? He is a former Guggenheim Fellow. Stories of Scottsboro was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. He is a Distinguished Professor at Rutgers University, Newark, where he teaches close reading, critical thinking, and creative writing in the history department and in the MFA program in creative writing.
