About This Item

E-027: Viking Books for Young Readers. Good. 1933. Hardcover. Hardcover. 8vo. Published by The Viking Press, New York 1933. 32 pgs. First Edition/First Printing (it's missing the DJ so we can't totally be sure here, but the 3 line publication information is present). Bound in illustrated paper covered cloth boards with titles present to the front board. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Ping was an adventurous duck who lived on a beautiful wise-eyed boat on the Yangtze River. He liked his life on the riverboat just and liked his large family and his kind master. He didn't like to be the last in line to board the boat at night, for that unlucky duck got a loud spank. So what did Ping do when it seemed that he would be the last on line? What else but set out on his own to explore the fascinating world of life on the Yangtze River. The Story about Ping is one of the best-loved and enduring children's books, both for its spirited and irrepressible hero and for its beautiful evocation of a distant land and way of life. Every child can sympathize with a dawdling duck who wants to avoid a spanking, and share his excitement and wonder as he sails down the river. Marjorie Flack collaborated with Kurt Wiese to illustrate The Story About Ping because she had no experience with Chinese culture and Wiese had lived in Japan. The collaboration was a success, and Ping became a popular favorite, in part because it was featured on the television show, Captain Kangaroo. EB; 9.1 X 6.6 X 1.1 inches .

Synopsis

"Kurt Wiese and Majorie Flack have created in Ping a duckling of great individuality against a background (the Yangtze River) that has both accuracy and charm." -- The New York Times
