The very First Book in the beloved series set in Victorian England featuring Doctor Dolittle, whose favorite patients are animals. Orig. published in 1920, reissued posthumously by Lofting's wife in 1948, this is the 55th printing, in with the Introduction to the Tenth Printing by Sir Hugh Walpole, in 172 pages, with the author's original frontispiece & 32 other black-and-white illustrations & full-page, lightly colored glossy plates throughout the text. Hardcover book is an Ex-Lib copy with the usual markings & card pocket in front matter & stamps to outside page edges. Library binding consisting of sturdy blue cloth over boards with colorful decoration & lettering to front & spine. Small area on lower spine shows fading where old call number was, which has been carefully removed. Condition is Good+: generally quite clean, binding strong & straight, pages creamy white. Synopsis

The Story of Doctor Dolittle is a 1920 book about Doctor John Dolittle and his animals. This book is the first in a series of children's books by Hugh Lofting. Doctor Dolittle is a doctor who can speak with the animals in their own languages. He starts treating animals instead of human patients.
