About This Item
Allahabad: A.H. Wheeler & Co., [1888]. First edition. "Indian Railway Library, No. 2." Rebound in full leather by "C. Fox" with original, first-issue front cover bound in, 2 pages of ads as called for at front, and first 6 pages of ads called for at rear (lacking final leaf with ad page [vii]). Printed label affixed to 3rd page of ads above "Plain Tales from the Hills" reading "From/ A. H. Wheeler & Co., Allahabad,/ and/ All Railway Bookstalls" (not recorded in Richards [A15]) and with rear cover bound in with illustration usually seen on IN BLACK AND WHITE, which was No. 3 in the series [Richards A16]. As this copy has been rebound, we assume the rear cover from the later volume was bound in either by mistake or design (versus it representing some sort of variant of the original binding). 8vo slender gilt-stamped full green leather with raised spine bands, inner gilt dentelles, and marbled endpapers. Armorial "Think and Thank" bookplate on front pastedown. Very good to near fine with spine toned to brown, tiny chip to lower corner front wrapper, archival tape repair to front ad leaf where starting to split along the hinge, and few small edge tears to text block.
