About This Item
Macmillan, 1929. Hardcover. Very Good/No Dustjacket . A collection of some of Masefield's finest poems, including "Dauber", the tale of a farm boy who wants to be a painter and who runs off to sea. He is the ship's painter and lampman, nicknamed "Dauber". As an "idler", (non-sailor), he bunks in the roundhouse with the other non-sailors, (cook, carpenter, and son on). The trip is a treacherous one around the Cape, and Dauber is called upon to throw off the taunts directed to him as an idler, ("...being neither man nor seaman..."), and prove his worth as a sailor. The balance of the book is taken up by a selection of other Masefield shorter poems, most with a sailing subject. John Masefield was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1930 until his death in 1967, and won the Shakespeare Prize in 1938.
