About This Item

(London: George G. Harrap, 1939). 8vo; original blue cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; no dustwrapper; pp. xiv + 235, incl. index; colour frontis. with captioned tissue-guard; plates, incl. colour; line drawings in text. All illustrations by the author. Cloth worn, esp. to head of backstrip, and a little fishmothed; ownership inscription to front endpaper; rather foxed and browned. Fair to good condition. Subtitle: "Animals in armor. The land of marsupials. Topsyturvy creatures. Behemoths of Scripture. Giants who took to the sea. Camels of the Andes. The strangest animal of all." From the author's introduction: 'No doubt there are many persons who will feel that some of these tales of strange animals are incredible; that they are much too strange to be true, but in the animal world as well as in the world of man, truth is often stranger than fiction. Like the farmer who, gazing at the giraffe declared, "There ain't no sech critter," we may find it difficult to convince ourselves that there are such strange animals and animal ways, yet the fact remains, whether, as Ripley says: we "believe it or not."
