About This Item

Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1908. x, 381 pp. First American edition. Octavo. Original blue cloth boards. Gilt lettering on the spine. Gilt emblem on the cover. All edges trimmed; top edge gilt. Previous owner's stamps and bookplate on the half title. Fifty-six halftone illustrations on art paper, principally from the author's photographs, of Tahiti, Samoa, New Zealand and Rotorua. "I am a Victorian," Beatrice Grimshaw once wrote. "I was governessed and schooled and colleged. I was taught to ride and play games. I was taught to behave. To write notes for Mamma. To do the flowers. To be polite but not too polite, to Young Gentlemen. To accept flowers, sweets and books from them, but no more." But the Victorian writer, photographer and journalist was to become a world wide traveller. This volume documents a trip to the South Seas, beginning in 1904. It is also liberally embellished with black and white photographs taken by Grimshaw. 1908
