About This Item

Lewis Walpole Library, Yale University (distributed by Yale University Press), New Haven, first edition, 2011. Cloth, 4to, 27 cm,. 142 pp, ills, (some colour). From the introduction: "I have ..attempted to provide an account of the Press and its achievement, and to put this in the context of the unexpected number of surviving pictures of the Printing House, and of Kirgate as its most celebrated printer. This has involved a consideration of the activities of those collectors who were also extra-illustrators of books (a fashion in whose creation Walpole was closely involved), and also of the artists who, in the context of Strawberry Hill, worked to meet the demand tor extra- illustration. I have used maps to show how the Printing House fitted into Walpole's estate at Strawberry Hill and, in conjunction with later prints and photographs, to record the unfamiliar story of the buildings' decay and adaptation after Walpole's death and Kirgate's departure." A Presentation Copy inscribed by the author on the title-page (signed 'Stephen'). Fine in Fine dustwrapper.
