About This Item
Melbourne, North Melbourne: Australian Scholarly Publishing (ASP), 2018. 1st ed.. Paperback large octavo, very good condition, black & white drawings (lithographs, watercolours, & few text-photos), bottom corners few pages little creased, minor edgewear. 345 pp. This is the story of Joseph Anderson Panton, who came to Australia from Scotland during the colonial era. He was a high-minded pillar of society as well as a scourge of poor miners and political foes. His previously unpublished memoirs trace vividly his strange career as itinerant dignitary, severe commissioner and magistrate, vigneron, pastoralist and painter, showing new and surprising aspects of colonial social life. This book will interest anyone wanting to learn more about life on the Victorian goldfields. Edited and annotated by Hugh Anderson, acaemic historian, University of Melbourne.
